SINGAPORE ART SOCIETY
In October 1949, The Singapore Art Scene registered a historical change with the founding of “The Singapore Art Society” the main objectives was to foster the practice and appreciation of art and to raise the quality of art in Singapore, to promote the exchange of art between Singapore and other countries and to create learning and exhibition opportunities for artists. Membership was open to any art lover, regardless of race or creed. The founding members were nine respectable leaders from different institutions, namely:

The Presidents
Over last 65 years, eight Presidents held this portfolio. They were outstanding leaders who had worked with strong conviction, clear vision and integrity to uphold the image of the society. They had played significant part to promote Art and to lead members to conquer new barriers. Under their leadership the Singapore Art Society had grown to be the largest art promotion organization with more than 491 members. Those who had served in this position are as follows:

The Activities of the Society
The Society had been active in organizing Art exhibitions for its members both in Singapore and overseas. During the last 65 years Art Exhibitions were held at the former British Council Building, Victoria Memorial Hall, National Library, Orchard Point exhibition hall and the Paragon exhibition hall, Ngee Ann Exhibition Hall, Atrium (MCCY Bldg). Overseas exhibitions and painting tours were also organized. The following are the records of activities:

1955 6th local Art Exhibition. In July, Mr. Ho Kok Hoe organized an Art exhibition of selected members work at the Imperial Institute (London). 1975 26th Local Artists’ Exhibition. International Women’s year Exhibition with Guest of Honour, First Lady Mrs.
Sheares. Nayang Siang Pau sponsored $2,000 for this exhibition. Art Work from Ms. Georgette Chen, Su- nyee, Chen Yeh Siew, Lai Fong Moi and Rohani Ismail was exhibited in Indonesia organized by the Min. of Culture. The Society sponsored $600 each to 14 art Exhibition by our members, Namely – Tew Nai Tong, Tsue to Tee, Tan Teng Kee, Yip Foong Yin, Shou-po, Goh Beng Kwan, Cheo Chew Hiang, Tan Yee Hong, Yeo Hoe Koon, Peter Lau, Leong Chun Hong, Leong Chun Keng, Sieh Hui-Shian and 10 members from Kuala Lumpur Art College. 200 members gather for a lunch hosted by Mr. Tan Kong Pit at his home.
1976 27th Local Artists’ Exhibition, Lee Foundation sponsored $ 750 towards the printing of the art catalogue.
Mr. Liu Kang gave lecture and a slide show on our members tour to Europe. Excursion to the Aw Eng Kwang’s Pottery at Johere. The Society and Sin Chew Jit Poh jointly organized a Sketching Competition and Exhibition held at the National Museum Art Gallery, 70 members Participated. Solo Show of Lam Yiu Rui, Leong Chun Hong, Chow Chin, Tan Joo Jong, Hou His Cheng, Tung Chen Shi, Lim Leong Seng and Tsue Ta Tee.
1977 28th Local Artists Exhibition, Our Patron, Dr Tan Tsze Chor was conferred Honorary Doctorate in Taiwan, he donated $ 50,000 to the society set up the Dr. Tan Tsze Chor Art Award Fund. Paintings donation to Tong Chai Hospital and an art book “Paintings for Tong Chai Hospital” was launched. Solo Exhibition by Wu Tsai Yen, Tan Seng Yong, Jen Chan Han, Lee Wei-On, Chia Yin Choo, Lee Ching Mon, Yot-Por Cheng, Cheng How Chien and Low Puay Hua.
1978 29th Local Artists Exhibition, Lee Foundation Sponsored $700 for publishing the Exhibition catalogue. A Dinner was held at the Apollo Hotel, attended by more than 100 members, the owner of the hotel sponsored
$840.50. Solo show of Wong Teng Hee, Yang Tiung Chin, Kwok Kong Yu, Lam Po Wah, Lee Siak Koong, Chan
Tien, Kang Siong Joo, Shou -Po Tao.
1979 30th Anniversary Commemorative Art Exhibition and Inauguration of the “Dr.Tan Tsze Chor Art Award”, The First Winner was Ms Lin Hsin Hsin. A souvenir magazine was published and a dinner was organized to celebrate the occasion. Solo Exhibition by Yeo Hoe Koon, Aw Eng Kwang and Yik Yuet-Sek.
1980 31st Local Artists’ Exhibition.
1981 32nd Local Artists’ and Dr Tan Tsze Chor Art Award Exhibition. The Winners are Tay Chee Toh and Ng Eng Teng.
1982 33rd Local Artists’ and Dr Tan Tsze Chor Art Award Exhibition. The Winners are Tang Kian How.
1983 34th Local Artists’ and Dr Tan Tsze Chor Art Award Exhibition. The Winner is Leo Hee Tong. The Society sponsored a Solo show “ Sketches and paintings” by Ho Kok Hoe at the National Museum Art Gallery.
1984 35th Anniversary Commemorative Art Exhibition, Dr Tan Tsze Chor Art award, and publishing of an Art Album. A dinner was also organized, five members were awarded the long service medals, they were Liu Kang, Ng Eng Teng, Wong Kian Ping, Foo Chee San and Yah Tian Yau. Taiwan Contemporary Art Exhibition, Ren Zhen Han Art Exhibition, Nai Swee Leng Art Exhibition, Sunyee’s Art collection, Wy Shyh Guey Solo show, Hong Kong Artist Exhibition, Liu Yue Sheng and Cheng Song Guo Two men show. First Youth Art Exhibition and Dr. Tan Tsze Chor Youth Art award was awarded to Goh Ee Choo, Wong Shin, Ng Siew Eng, Yeo Siak Goon.
Constitution Revision
On 28th April 1984, a sub- committee was formed to revise the Constitution of the Society. The members were Liu
Kang, Ho Ho Ying, Choo Keng Kwang, Wong Kian Ping, Tong Siang Eng and Quek Kian Guan.
On 30th September 1984, the revision was approved at the 35th AGM with the following amendment:

1985 36th Local Artists and Dr Tan Tsze Chor Art Award Exhibition. An art Exhibition was organized to tour the major cities in Taiwan, a total of 70 Artwork by 64 members were displayed. Artist accompanying the tour were Ho Ho Ying (leader), Lee See Sin, Chieu Shuey Fook, Teng Wen Chang, Lu Wen Ying, Lai Wen Kee, Wong Kian Ping, Yeo Siak Goon, Yang Shao Qiu, Tan Yee Hong, Aw Hong Beng, Su Qi Hua and Xia Jing Lian. ASEAN Art and Photography Exhibition, 21 representatives from the Asean countries attended the show opening. Hong Kong Chinese University Chinese Resources Charity Exhibition in Hong Kong- Members of SAS and other Art Societies donated 130 pieces of Art work. The President, Ho Ho Ying and Adviser Pan Shou were invited to the opening of the Exhibition. Poems, Calligraphy and Painting Exhibition by Xiao Yao Tian.
1986 37th Local Artists’ and Dr Tan Tsze Chor Art Award Exhibition. Joint Art Exhibition with Japan Art Associa- tion, three members were awarded International Art Awards, they were Kuan Soong (Calligraphy), Tong Chin Sye (Watercolours) and Ng Yak Whee (Oil Painting). 2nd Youth Art Exhibition and Dr Tan Tsze Chor youth Art Award. A cultural and Art exchange exhibition on Chinese paintings was jointly organized with Metro. Eastcoast Art Fair organized in conjunction with People’s Association, Aw Tee Hong Art Exhibition, Three Professors from Beijing Art Exhibition. Solo Show of Ma Jia Bao, Lim Kang Kee, Tan Seng Yong and Zheng Shi Jun.
1987 38th Local Artists and Dr Tan Tsze Chor Art Award Exhibition. 3 Korean, Lee Byung Suek, Lee Woo Chong, Choi Sung Min Exhibition, Six Taiwan Artists Exhibition, Wee Beng Chong and Students Art Exhibition, Tang Ta Wu Demonstration Art, Solo show of Cheng Yong Jie, Hou Hsi Ching, Zheng Shi Jun, Ang Chee Teng, Tay Chee Toh Sculpture. 1988 39th Local Artists and Dr Tan Tsze Chor Art Award Exhibition. A talk on Art was presented by Prof. Li Zhe Hou at the Tanjong Pagar Railway Station Pub, Tan Kian Por –7th Solo Exhibition, Teng Xiao Xia Solo Art Exhibition.
1989 40th Anniversary Commemorative Art Exhibition and Dr Tan Tsze Chor art Award Exhibition. A book entitled “Contemporary Singapore Artists” was Published to Commemorate this Occasion. At the celebration dinner “Long Service Medals” was awarded to Ho Ho Ying, Tan Tee Chie, Choo Keng Kwang, Siew Soo, Dr Choong Chee Pang, Leo Hee Tong, Lim Leong Seng, Quek Kian Guan and Chang Kwang Wee. A tour of the Silk Route in China was organized, participating members were Ho Ho yong (Leader), Chieu Shuey Fook, Lee See Sin, Ms Cheng, Ching Hing Kang, See Chin Tee, See Chin Chuang, Lee Choon Kee, He Da Song and others. Liu Kang, See Chin Tee, See Chin Chunag, Lee Choon Kee, He Da Song and others. Liu Kang Solo Exhibition, jointly organized with the Ministry of Information and the Arts and National Arts Museum. 1990 41st Local Artists and Dr Tan Tsze Chor Art Award Exhibition. 12 members participated in the Macau and Singapore joint art exhibition. 3 men show, Tan Ping Chiang, Sim Pang Liang and Swee Khim Ann. Tay Bak Koi Exhibition, Kao Shiong International Art Exhibition, Quan Zheng Huan, Li Cheng and Li Tong Art Exhibition, Lee Peng Yong, Loh Lee Fong Art Exhibition. Gold Award ($6,000) Lim Leong Seng, 3 Excellence Awards of ($2,000) each, Chan Choy Har, Seah Kang Chui and Kong Yin Ling. Chiang Hong Pte Ltd., Mr. Tan Gek Gnee and Mr Tan Gek Chong each donated $ 50,000 towards the Dr Tan Tsze Chor Art Award Fund. The Fund now stand at $ 450,000. China Art Exposition ’97 at Beijing, 10 members participated in this event, they were Khor Ean Ghee, Irene Hong, Chieu Fook, Koeh Sia Yong, Teo Chin Keong, Low Puay Hua, Ching Hing Kang, Lim Kay Hiong, Tan Chin Guan, Tan Kay Nguan. On
28th of March the Singapore Art society was relocated at 10, Kampong Eunos. Khor Ean Ghee represented SAS to sit in the selection committee for Kampong Glam CC Art Diploma Award. Keoh Sia Yong represented SAS to the Tea Reception at Mandarin Hotel. Khor Ean Ghee and Irene Hong represented SAS at the NAC dialogue session.
1998 49th Local Artists Exhibition and Dr Tan Tsze Chor Art Award with total Prize money of $ 20,000.Adopting a new format the award was separated into 4 categories namely Calligraphy, Chinese Ink Painting, Represen- tational and Abstract Art. The first prize of $3,000 each was awarded to Yong Huay Peng, Lee Hock Moh, Tan Juat Lee and Ng Yak Whee. Distinction Prize of $ 1,000 each was awarded to Kong Yin Ling, Poh Yew Kwan, Tay Shuh Fun, Fan Shao Hua, Wong Kian Ping, Lee Sah Yang, Chua Say Hua and Loke Yong Fun. A full colour Catalogue was published.

A Mini Painting Exhibition size not larger than 20cm X 30cm was held the Orchard Point Exhibition Hall, a total of 397 paintings by 66 members was exhibited. The Director of the Singapore Art Museum Mr. Kwok Kian Chow was the Guest-of-honour at the opening. 13th International Watercolours Exhibition of Asia in Hat Yai, Thailand,10 members participated in the exhibition and outdoor painting tours.
1999 50th Anniversary Commemorative Art Exhibition was held at the new Paragon Exhibition Hall,180 members participate in this show, the Dr Tan Tsze Chor Art Award Prize money is $ 20,000 divided into 4 categories, namely Chinese calligraphy Chinese Ink Painting, Representational and Abstract Art. The First Prize of $3,000 each was awarded to Ng Cheng Kee, Chen Wuji (Defa) Tan Kay Nguan and Chieu Shuey Fook. Distinction Prize of $1,000 each was awarded to Phang Weng Kiong, Lee Kiah Ngee, Tay Bak Chiang, Lee Soon Heng, Lim Kay Hiong, Chung Hock Lee, Tay Chee Toh, Low Puay Hua.
The Family of Dr Tan Tsze Chor donated $ 50,000 towards Art Award Fund. The Fund now stand at $ 600,000.
18 of our members went on a painting tour to Malaka in March, a get-together dialogue session was held with the local Artists at the Malaqua House art Gallery.
Anhui Artist Association extended an invitation to Singapore Art Society to start and exhibition exchange program where the two organizations will take turn to host the exhibition. In this Inauguration show, Singa- pore Watercolours Painting Exhibition, 40 members were represented with 80 watercolour paintings in this exhibition. 12 members traveled to Anhui to attend the opening ceremony, engage in art forums, seminars and conduct outdoor watercolours painting demonstration. Painting tours to scenic landscape around the region was also organized. A Commemorating art Catalogue was published, with funding from The National Arts Council and The Lee Foundation.
To commemorate the Golden anniversary of the Society, it embarked on publishing a case bound book entitled “Singapore art Society 50th Anniversary Artists’ Directory” featuring the history of the Society, 180 pages of members’ work in full colour and a full members’ addresses and contact listing.

14th International Watercolour Exhibition of Asia held from 28 September to 12 October at XuChang, China. Twenty artists were invited: Khor Ean Ghee, Sim Tong Khem, Wong Kam Chuen, Ang Ah Tee, Keong Hean Keng, Seah Kang Chui, Seah Kam Chuan, Anne Lirn Geok Kuan, Teo Li Keng, Tan Kah Nguan, Low Puay Hwa, Goh Chye Kee, Poh Siew Wah, Tan Chee Teck, Tan Leong Kheng, Tan Seng Heng, Carree Ng, Ruby Tan Geok Kim, Belinda Chua Buay Lin and Tan Cheng Cheng.
Dr Tan Tsze Chor Art Award Competition 2000 held on 17 – 22 November at Paragon. The Guest of Honour was Mr Choo Thiam Siew, Executive Director of National Arts Council, 46 Chinese Calligraphy and Chinese Ink Paintings were on show. The prizes were: Chinese Calligraphy: one winner of $5,000 and two distinction of $1,000 each. Chinese Ink Painting: one winner of $5,000. and two distinction of
$1,000 each.
From this year, the Chinese Calligraphy and Chinese Ink Painting of the Dr Tan Tsze Chor Art Award competition were OPEN to Singapore Citizens and Permanent Residents. The Objective is to promote art in Singapore and to provide a platform for artists to showcase their artistic creation and recognition for achievements.
51 Anniversary Exhibition cum Dr Tan Tsze Chor Western Art Award were held on 22 to 30 December at MITA, the Guest of Honour was Mr Choo Thiam Siew, Executive Director of National Arts Council.
90 paintings were on show. For the western art Representation and Abstract (member only) one winner of
$3,000 and one distinction of $1,000 in each Section.
Mini Painting 2000 was held at Orchard Point. 360 paintings from 120 artists participated in the show.
SAS with China Anhui Artist Association exchange programme Exhibition in Singapore were held on 14-20
September at Paragon Gallery. Sixty paintings from 6 Anhui Artists and 30 paintings from 30 SAS watercolour painters were on show. Guest of Honour was Mr Yatiman Yusof, Senior Parliamentary Secretary.

The cash prizes for Chinese Calligraphy and Chinese Ink one winner each of $5,000; and two each distinction prizes of $1,000. for western Art Representational and Abstract Painting.
The SAS Art Exhibition 2001 cum Dr Tan Tsze Chor Western Art Award was joined with Diversity-Nokia Singapore Art 2001 exhibited at MTTA. Guest of Honour was Mr Kwok Kian Chow, Director of Singapore Art Museum.
Asian Pacific Watercolour Painting Exhibition held on 2-25 March at Taipei, Taiwan. 20 of SAS artists were invited to participate in the show.
